Jimmy The Bang? "Loop Playback"

e.d.g.e. is one of my favorite emcees. And he's a cool dude too. Just recently he pulled together a collection of some cuts he 'loop technician'd." I'll pretend like that is actually a word as we jump into this Loop Playback project from what you could call e.d.g.e.'s alter ego Jimmy The Bang? Enjoy.
Via e.d.g.e.:
Aside from rhyming, I often make beats on the side...I wouldn't call myself a producer, or even a beatmaker though. The reason being, most of my  work consists of repeated 4-bar loops, more often than not without basslines! So I'd prefer to call myself a "Loop Technician", hence the title "Loop Playback". My "Loop Technician" name has always been Jimmy The Bang? (the question mark is a rhetorical one)... Either way, enjoy my collection of loops that I placed in chronological order (Early Evening was created in 2005 and Sleep Pattern in 2010), and feel free to download them. Most of them have been used for my own songs though, so if any MC's want to use them, mixtapes are fine.

What I'm Watching: ARTZ "Public Enemy #1"

"Public enemy N0.1 was inspired by the politics of the music industry, even though I am a passionate artist throughout my journey of building a foundation for my music career I crossed paths with what I like to call 'industry vultures.'"

Cool video from ARTZ. Enjoy.

Interview: Miss Special x Exile

Our West Coast ally Miss Special (or Miss Interview around these parts) caught up with Exile and talked about The Ecology with Fashawn, new Emanon project, Jay Electronica, Miguel and more. Another solid interview. Hit play and enjoy.
Last week before his show at 330 Ritch with Blu, I got to chat with one of my favorite producers, Exile. We spoke about the craziest thing he ever sampled, his second album with Fashawn "The Ecology", a new project as Emanon with Aloe Blacc and a Dag Savage project (including a free mixtape beforehand). We also spoke about working early with Miguel, his phone call with Jay Electronica, and his fascination with the radio.

Support Melissa Czarnik's next Album "Non Merci"

I have long been a fan of Melissa Czarnik. And for a while now, a friend of the Milwaukee emcee/poet. In the world of the Internets and just online communications, Melissa is one of those rare folks that I know off line. She's a great person too. We had a discussion last year about the possibility of an artist residency. I'm happy that panned out for her. Now she's asking for your support to help make her next album, Non Merci, while in France. It's a huge opportunity for her to focus solely on the creation of new music. I believe in supporting good people. So, support if you can too. And with that, I'll let her take it from here.
I wanted to let you know about this crowd funding campaign to help make my next album, Non Merci in France. Yes, France!  I have been accepted into an artist residency at the Camac Centre D'Art in Marnay-sur-Seine (about an hour from Paris).  With help from individuals like you I'll have the opportunity to spend two months (April & May) at the residency focusing solely on creation.  As an artist, this is the kind of thing one only dreams about! And here we are!

Each level of support ranging from $10-$500 will guarantee a pre-release copy of the album (for you), due to be released summer 2012!  Plus, you can go to sleep at night knowing that you made a friend, fellow woman, artist, AmeriCorps Alumna and poet's dream come true!

PEACE
Melissa

What I'm Watching: Mad Flows "Fo' Leaf" (Cypher Cyndicate Posse Cut) feat. TASK1ne, Konkwest, Chuuwee, and Lifted

"The mad rapper, the mad bloggers know I kill shit ..."

Not sure if that Chuuwee line was directed at TMB but we do know these Sac rappers are killing shit. And have been killing shit. When Mad Flows sent me this track a few weeks back I thought it was an incredible joint and really showcased some of the talent coming out of Sacramento. Featuring (in order of appearance) Task1ne, Mad Flows, Konkwest, Chuuwee and Lifted, "Fo' Leaf" is a solid posse cut. Pay attention. Enjoy. Chea!

Interview: Miss Special x Blu

Miss Interview ... err ... Miss Special chops it up with Blu in San Fran. Enjoy.
Before his show in SF I got to sit down with Blu and talk about a few things. We spoke about working with Quelle and Chuuwee on songs dropping later this year, the status of his "UCLA" project with Madlib and the idea behind the song "Doin Somethin" with U-N-I, Pac Div, TiRon, Ayomari, J*Davey etc. We also spoke about his newest release "Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them" including the reason for the "un-mastered" sound, if there will be a mastered version and why the tracks were from 2009. In addition, we spoke about the samples he's chosen for Exile, the many more songs from "No York" and hard copies of "Below The Heavens". (Again, I sincerely apologize for the quality of this video, the Exile one will be much better on Friday).

Boog Brown - "Baby Girl" (prod. Georgia Muldrow)

Both versions have their own feel to it and both work for me. Boog Brown doesn't disappoint on "Baby Girl" dedicating this track to those hard working, talented women in the world. Take a listen.

Boog Brown has released her first ever vinyl 7" as part of Mello Music's new monthly series. The record features 2 songs produced by Georgia Anne Muldrow. The first "My Love Rmx" was featured on Boog's Brown Study Remixes album, but the B-Side is a previously unreleased track that Georgia laid the soundscape under titled "Baby Girl". The 7" vinyl series is limited to just 300 copies of each edition! To give listeners a taste, Boog & MMG are giving the B-Side track "Baby Girl" along with a second version of "Baby Girl" - both produced by Georgia Anne Muldrow.

ScienZe x JohnNY U. "Mother Nature's Daughter" (Prod. Clint Partie)

Let's be real. I saw the artwork before I heard the track. I was stuck on that for a minute. Ha! But I'm also obviously digging the track too. I mean, you can't go wrong with a beautiful black woman as cover art, assisted by a ScienZe and JohnNY U track. What I'm Watching: Kirby Lauryen - "Growing On Me" (A Song A Day - 19)

I've come across some great things over the past few weeks. I've just been a little slow getting them posted. Interestingly enough, a lot of them seem to be coming out of Berklee College of Music. The talent coming out of that institution is incredible. The most recent I've stumbled upon is Kirby Lauryen. Can we say, wow?! Beautiful song. And we all know how it feels to have someone gradually become apart of your life. I look forward to hearing songs from Day 1 - 18, and I also look forward to hearing everything after Day 19. Lyriciss "Big Gold Chain"

As I began to compile my own write up, I think the homie Richard over at DJBooth.net sums it up best. Definitely a dope track. Look out for The Balance EP: Money EP over at the Booth sometime today. In the meantime enjoy Big Gold Chain.

"Is it worth risking your freedom and potentially your life for a pile of cash and a "Big Gold Chain"? Crazy as the bet may seem, all-too-many inner-city youths are willing to put everything on the line for a chance to shine. On Lyriciss’ latest single, the DMV rhymesayer offers listeners a little insight into social and economic conditions that turn poverty-stricken individuals into compulsive paper-chasers, and the often dire consequences of such an addiction."

Boog Brown - "Detroit" (prod. Apollo Brown)

This connection between Boog and Apollo on this track sounds so damn effortlessly mesmerizing. Boog Brown is easily creeping up on my list of adamantly admired emcees with every release she puts out or is on with Apollo being on my similar list for producers. Gotta love it when dopeness like this is free. Listen, download, and bump it.

Boog Brown is getting ready for a big 2012: she just dropped her full length remix project The Brown Study Remixes; has a free birthday party planned at 529 in Atlanta on February 9th w/ yU performing live; had her first vinyl 7" dropped today, January 17th; is releasing her debut album with Apollo - Brown Study - on special edition vinyl in March; and is about to record a new project with famed West Coast fOnkateer Georgia Anne Muldrow that will be out this fall on Mello Music Group. Boog Brown + Stanza - "Together" (prod King I Divine) [Beatz & Lyrics 2 Go Vol. 2]

Boog Brown is an ill ass emcee and a half. I've been convinced. She's teamed up with ATL's Stanza, whom we've been keeping an ear on here at TMB, and the results are nothing less than head nodding. King I Divine put his foot in the production as well. And to think, they recorded this during the 3 day festival down there in Georgia. Good stuff here.

The first leak from The Beatz & Lyrics Show’s annual Beatz & Lyrics 2 Go 2011 A3C mixtape is here! Atlanta MC Stanza teams up with Detroit’s own Boog Brown over a King I Divine production. This record is a small sampling of the type of collabs you will find on the project. All music for the mixtape was recorded during A3C, the 3-day hip hop festival in Atlanta, Ga on-site in Unique Squared’s Mobile Studio and at Salem Psalms Library in Atlanta, Ga.

What I'm Watching: Stori "Someone Like You" (An Adele Cover that's Actually Damn Good)

Folks that know me, know that I love Adele. Adele before everyone was hip to her with 21. I fucks with 19 unlike a lot of others. Her voice has always captivated me. So much passion. So much emotion. Classic soul music. And because of what Adele does vocally, I frown on covers of her tracks. Frown upon them heavily. I’ve heard a lot of Adele covers too. Frankly, most of them sound like shit. I however stumbled on this cover from Stori. Yeah, I really like this. She adds a little but doesn't take away from it. I dig that. This song always takes me somewhere else … Someone Like You is the classy version of Drake's Marvin's Room. Ha!

Tank - "Next Breath"

New joint by a favorite of mine in the genre of R&B. "Next Breath" is off his upcoming album Savior. Personally, I think he's been putting out better and better albums so I'm curious to see how this next one stands up to Now or Never. Check out this one. What do y'all think?

What I'm Watching: @JittaOnTheTrack - " I Don't Believe You // Slurred"

Funny story is that I first heard of this dude a while back from a guy that I randomly go to for haircuts. Yeah, the barbershop story. Haha. Dude proceeds to tell me about some cat he cuts that flows and gave me his info. I check him out but there wasn't anything recent enough for me to want to post so I forgot about it. Went back to that barbershop today and he asked if I checked it out. He oddly didn't ask me last time I went there. Probably didn't recognize me. Anyways, here I am today rechecking Jitta's music and found this joint released last month.

Definitely feeling "I Don't Believe You". It says it's produced by Jitta On The Beat. Guess dude can do a few things because that beat is pretty damn dope. As for "Slurred", it's not for me per say. I can hear it being played in a club nowadays but yeah, I'm not really feeling that one as much. Anyways, check out the video, which is clean, simple, and cool, and leave us your thoughts.

Official Music Video for Jitta On The Track's songs "I Don't Believe You" (Prod. By Jitta On The Beat) and "Slurred" (Prod. By Jaynez) off of his newest mixtape "Be Right Back" available for download here!

Mr. Ivory Snow - "A King's Treatment" (Prod. Ohbliv)

Check out Mr. Ivory Snow's latest off his upcoming release titled "Sex After Smoking". This joint, produced by Ohbliv, touches on Mr. Ivory's dreams and ambitions while letting you zone out sonically to it. I can't wait to hear the album once it's released.

What I'm Watching: Iggy Azalea "The Last Song"

There might be a few side eyes coming my way but I kind of like Iggy Azalea. I'm still kind of on the fence about her but there is something about her sound that I find interesting and intriguing. She's got my attention. In her latest, she takes a very simplistic approach with the black and white video, on what you could assume is not her last song.

What I'm Watching: Skyzoo "Could've Struck the Lotto"

Skyzoo jumps into the new year continuing his mean streak, with a bit of carry over from last year's The Great Debater. Solid video with Christopher Wilkes and Dave Canon sharing director duties. Enjoy. Chea!

Interview: Miss Special x Hawdwerk & Jansport J

Miss Special aka Miss Interview chops it up with Hawdwerk & Jansport J in an interview last year. She's on a mini hiatus right now but Special Sundays Radio Show returns January 29th, in the meantime enjoy the hilarity of this interview.
Last season on Special Sundays Radio Show I got to talk again to the hilarious Hawdwerk & Jansport J about their newest album "Black Balls". In the midst of the many jokes, we spoke about the idea behind the title, what happened behind the scenes while shooting their promo video and their "interesting friends" Elliot Alwood and Keith Grand. We also spoke about the narrator Tobias, and the process behind writing tracks the stand out tracks "My Type", "Proverbs", "Black Man" and "F*ck Jansport J" and more.

What I'm Watching: Joe Cool "I Wanna Sell Drugs"

Way back in September Joe Cool dropped the audio for this self-produced track off of his upcoming Cooley Hi. The video really brings the visuals together to the self-reflective track about hardship and grindin' with music. The new project drops January 19th. In the meantime, if you're looking for weed, holla at Joe he got what you need. Ha!

What I'm Watching: Gods'illa "Sal's Pizzeria"

Those DMV boys are back with another solid video for a dope cut from their CPR Blendtape hosted by DJ Lo' Down Loretta Brown aka Erykah Badu. With the vid for Sal's Pizzeria, the crew take inspiration from Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing, complete with a Radio Raheem in all his glory, which includes the 'Love Hate' four finger rings, boombox and the ill fade. Ha! Enjoy the vid. Chea!

What I'm Watching: Andy Suzuki & The Method "Her Ghost"

That boy Andy got more tattoos than an NBA player. Ha! But on a more serious note, Andy Suzuki & The Method serve up a solid track off of their upcoming project The Ghost Stories EP, which you can pre-order here. I've long been a fan of the group, having known Kozza (band member) and Andy for a while now. These guys are talented and while I try to convince them to do a cover project, you'll have to enjoy Her Ghost, which is a solid track accompanied by a beautiful video. Hit play, enjoy and look for more from Andy Suzuki & The Method soon. Chea!

Hip-Hop Breakfast Ep 96

I'm back. And with some new artwork no less, courtesy of OC Supreme behind the lens and the beautiful Jules Renae as our cover girl. I personally got tired with looking at my bum ass on the cover (and it's okay if you did too). This is definitely more visually pleasing. So, shouts to both of them.

Well, with just about a five week hiatus, Hip-Hop Breakfast is back to jump start the week. With a gang of solid music released between the last episode and now, Ep 96 finds a nice mix of material from the likes of Jean Grae, Common, Soul Khan, my rap guilty pleasure Rick Ross, Elle Maxwell and more. Mellow in the beginning, hyped by the end, HHB is back. Enjoy. Chea!

01. L.A. - A Place
02. Jean Grae - U&Me&EveryoneWeKnow
03. Soul Khan - I Should Die Today
04. Common - Lovin' I Lost
05. Elle Maxwell feat. Cliff Lewis - Only Wanna Give It To You (Remix)
06. Rapper Big Pooh feat. Donny Goines & Raven Sorvino - Don't Say Goodbye
