Check It ... Oddisee - "You Don't Close Your Eyes"

Oddisee is highly regarded on The Mad Bloggers and I finally got to this short gem in my email and felt the need to share. Long enough to make you want more, this track is inviting. Dope!

"You Don't Close Your Eyes" is about the dynamics of a relationship turned cold. Clever wordplay and an effortless cadence propel this insightful tale of domestic apathy, which finds Oddisee questioning what changed in his relationship: "restaurant parking lots seem like the spot in the plot where you like to talk a lot, where it used to be the spot in the plot where the windows was steamed because the heat coming off was hot." Also along for the ride is frequent collaborator/keyboardist, Ralph Real, whose tenor adds an emotional intensity that helps accentuate the frustrations of unrequited love.

Check It ... Lucky Looch - "Never Enough featuring Cryptic Method"

Hailing from Meriden, CT, I caught Lucky Looch recently promoting this track that came out about a month ago titled "Never Enough" with the help of Cryptic Method. Feels like a good summer track for Hip-Hop fans. He's about to shoot a video for this on June 19th in Meriden, CT so if you're interested in being in the video, hit him up in his inbox: Lucky Looch on FB

BE.water "Stars Of Eternal Shine"

This joint has been sitting in the inbox for a few days and I finally got the chance to listen to this joint. Damn, what an incredibly chill and dope project from BE.water. At 24 tracks it seems overwhelming but you just flow straight through what BE.water calls, "endless thoughts, because I feel that within the universe and our mind - the possibilities are endless." Enjoy. Chea!

What I'm Watching ... Fashawn - "Down That Road featuring Sam Hook "

New video from the Fresno, Cali homie Fashawn featuring Sam Hook with a much more chill, laid back kind of cut about a certain lady in the man's life.

"You are my future. I wanna be where you are.
Don’t know what you doing cause you're so damn far.
So I'm flying down that road..."

Pretty dope 'collaboration' between Laws and Paul. This joint definitely hits. Check it.

Laws gives us a visual to his version of Sir Paul McCartney's Instrumental "Momma Miss America" from his 1970 album McCartney. The Laws version is on his Yesterday's Future Mixtape hosted by Mick Boogie & Don Cannon.

L.A. "Spitting Out Blood"

"I thought it was all love and shit, until the truth hit my jaw..."

I've known L.A. for almost a year now. She's good peoples. It's dope to watch the continued growth of such a talented emcee. She's currently working on her new project L.A. Riots, and a few weeks back she hit me with the preview of this Hippie Sabotage produced track. The moment I heard "Spitting Out Blood", I knew it was a winner. On L.A.'s last project The Presentation she borrowed a lot of Kanye beats and I think the difference with her upcoming L.A. Riots will be proving to her fans and critics alike how she can control her flow over original cuts. L.A. does that on "Spitting Out Blood". The aggressive, heartfelt track will have you vibing along. Enjoy. Chea!

What EMS Is Watching ... @mcloughlinmusic - "Save The World Tonight"

Dear Collin McLoughlin,

If you are reading this post, I'd just like to tell you that you are extremely talented. I came across your music through my blogger-colleague, Q, re-tumbling a post from Jinesis. I am quite impressed. I always love to throw a curve ball to my audience for the simple fact of exposing them to all genres.

If I could tell my audience anything about you, I'd tell them that I particularly love your voice, and even more so the simplicity of this song. "Save The World Tonight" displays your vocal control, melodic lines and love of pure music. "Save The World Tonight" is completely stripped of all things Hollywood and as a listener, I am truly grateful for that. I especially love how your voice slightly bends the notes as you sing and the faint grittiness you bring to your songs.

I look forward to knowing you as an artist through your music and finding more projects you've done. And as a blogger, I am truly grateful for artists like you because it makes the writing all the worthwhile. This has honestly lifted my spirit. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Erica

EP05 Fresh Daily Pt. 02 from LIVE AT THE LOFT on Vimeo.

A few days ago I posted up part one of this video featuring Fresh Daily in his Live at The Loft performance. Just a few hours ago they posted up the second half of the performance. Like I said in the initial post (and a few other times), Fresh Daily is that dude and his sound is dope. I dig what he's doing musically for sure. Enjoy the music and shouts to Tone. Chea!

YC THE CYNIC / THE HARDER IT IS / SOUTHPAW from Giovanni P Autran on Vimeo.

Time and time again, you've heard me praise YC The Cynic's recent project Fall Fwd. Perhaps among my top three favorite cuts is The Harder, which also happens to be the shortest jawn on the project. Back in March at his album release, Giovanni P Autran caught a live performance of the track. To steal a line from the homie Khal over at rockthedub, "YC #noracks will be at The Compound on Thursday" Yes, tonight muddasuckas. Shane Eli "Have Mercy"

Shane Eli's recent I Can Do Better is a dope project. I remember being hyped with the singles leading up to the release and playing the project on and off for the weeks following it's release. Then The Smoking Section featured the latest single, "Have Mercy" and it reminded me of how much I loved this project from the L.A. producer/rapper/songwriter. Every now and again I hear a track that makes me visualize a video in my head. "Have Mercy" is one of those tracks. Shot in black and white, I see an old diner, the back of a cab, school bus and church shots. But that's just my imagination running wild. Ha! Anyway, enjoy "Have Mercy." Chea!

Theo Martins "I Can't Stop (Puffy Time)"

Theo Martins is a dope fella. I'm currently working on a feature on him over at Refined Hype (look out for that in a few days) in my Return of The Real column. Today he hit me on twitter with a new cut, "I Can't Stop (Puffy Time)." I dig it. Between the fresh artwork and the dope track, I Can't Stop is a winner. Enjoy. Chea!
Just bought a bike (a Schwinn, can you believe it?) and I’m going to take it for a spin. The weather outside is beautiful.

Anyhow, in preparation for my Asia tour next week inspired me to put out one of my recent favorite records titled, Puffy Time produced by Dubstep phenom Flux Pavilion. Like Turn It Up this song explores my taste on heavy Dubstep production.

Also, the swanky new video for Take You There off my latest project, Sincerely Yours, The Dance Floor directed by Rex Arrow Films will be out very soon.

What I'm Watching: Frank Ocean “Acura Integurl”

Frank Ocean “Acura Integurl” from Team OnSMASH on Vimeo.

Folks think of Frank Ocean as kind of the odd ball in Odd Future, if that makes sense. The Def Jam signee adds an interesting and sometimes edgy twist to R&B but nothing like the edge Odd Future adds to music. I think the dude is talented and with something like 80 cuts from him in my iTunes, I think what he is doing is pretty dope. Let's see how much Def Jam fucks up this already winning formula. EVENT: The Bury The Hatchet Show (5/28/11)

Milwaukee, if you haven't been paying attention to the blog, is a hot pocket of talented Hip-Hop. In my opinion it's better to work together than work apart or work against. These four dope acts are just the tip of the iceberg of what Milwaukee has to offer. I'll let JC Poppe explain the concept behind The Bury The Hatchet Show this Saturday night at the Cactus Club out in Milwaukee.
I wanted to let you know about a big show happening on May 28th at Cactus Club, beginning at 10PM, with a cover of $5.
Myself and Axtra (manager of Prophetic, and other UMG artists) are bringing together 2 UMG artists and 2 former House of M artists to do a show that symbolizes the end of the beef between these respective artists.
AUTOMatic, Prophetic, Raze, and Yo-Dot, will be taking the stage as peers on that night, the first time in over a year and for the second time in several years! There are no openers, there are no closers, there are just four dope hip-hop acts that are going to perform their butts off for those in attendance.
If you didn’t know there used to be a beef between UMG and House of M, there was a lot of bad blood between the two camps for years…going back to around 2008 and bridging deep into 2010.
When the House of M fell apart at the end of 2010, A.P.R.I.M.E. and Trellmatic of AUTOMatic, and Raze no longer wished to carry on any ill will because the issues were more with others that had been House of M, and the guys of UMG were tired of the cumbersome rigmarole beefing often presents. After several years, it was just stale and almost a cliche.
So, in an attempt to build bridges where they once were burned, I approached Axtra with the idea at the listening party for my albums Shadowlands/Tea Party and he was completely open to it!
As former manager of House of M (2010), and current manager of AUTOMatic and Raze, I’m very excited about this show because in my opinion these artists, AUTOMatic, Prophetic, Raze, and Yo-Dot, are some of the best that Milwaukee has to offer…and it’s going to be great to finally have them on stage with each other without any sour air in the building.
It should be said, however, that this show in no way reflects the feelings or thoughts of other former House of M members and UMG members and they are not included in this show’s line-up. Others have also burried the hatchet, but there are also some that are still very much leary of each other.
The night is going to be fun and is something that will help the Milwaukee hip-hop scene step closer towards the unification it once enjoyed in 2007.
The poster was designed by Dana Coppafeel.
Umbrella Music Group is a Milwaukee based label that is represented by artists like Prophetic, Ka$h, Yo-Dot, Tay Butler, and Adlib. No Half Steppin Crew is represented by artists like AUTOMatic, Raze, The Hollowz, DJ JDL, and DJ Bizzon.

Jinesis "Maliah" (from Otisis)

Folks that know me well, know how much I enjoy the work of Otis Redding. Those who have followed the blog long enough also know how much I've come to respect the work of New York producer Jinesis. And so a few months back during one of our online convos about music I pitched him an idea to take Otis Redding tracks and flip 'em. Jinesis jumped on board with no hesitation and hit the ground running. Over the last few weeks I've been anxious and overly excited about this project and sharing it with all of you. Jinesis is a very talented producer and soon enough folks will understand and respect that. We are approaching one of his finest hours. And to intro the first preview from Otisis, I'll let Jinesis take it from here...

"Maliah mentioned on twitter that a lot of dudes are afraid to date her seriously because they dont want the attention that comes with dating a dancer/model/vixen. That candid, world weary and personal tweet came from a sensitive place and once Jinesis sat with the sample the sentiment echoed. This a glimpse into one of the beats from the Jinesis produced Otis Redding sampled project "Otisis" presented by The Mad Bloggers."

Entirely produced by Jinesis.

Naeem Oba "Nigger"

"Chew on this... then spit out ya broken teeth! SALUTE!" -Naeem Oba

I could probably begin and end this post with "this track is real." But I'll go one step further and say that it's dope and requires your immediate attention. I first heard Naeem Oba last year when he was featured over at iheartdilla.com. I was immediately pulled into his sound, both from a production and content standpoint. I appreciated his music. Some might classify it as conscious but I think it's just deeper than what you typically hear in Hip-Hop today. Naeem is currently working on his upcoming EP Nigger, guaranteed to be controversial with it's title alone. A few days ago he hit me with the title track from the EP produced by King Karnov and featuring brikAbrak. Hit play. Listen and enjoy. Chea!

With Uncommon the LA underground crew dropped Diversity, their debut LP, a few days ago. As the press release said, "Diversity as an album is just that, DIVERSE." And I agree. It's that diversity that makes it unique and enjoyable. The production (EQ, Nasa, OoloO the Wize and more) is solid. The content is fresh. And the features (Aceyalone, Abstract Rude, Myka 9, Nga Fish, Rifleman (aka Ellay Khule), Graves, Olmeca and Neila) are on point. At the very least the project is worth a listen. I vibed with at least 90% of it (and that says a lot based on some of the music I receive on a weekly basis). Enjoy.

Gearing Up For The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival

BHF 2011 headliner, Q-Tip

Canadian Rapper Shad
Yeah buddy, it's that time of year again. You know, when the Brooklyn Bodega rolls out their line-up for the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. O and I have attended the last few years, rain and shine. We've peeped some pretty dope live performances, enjoyed good food, drank and have met up with some fresh people.

BHF is where we met Lady Blogga for the first time in person after being cool for months online. BHF is where we met YC The Cynic, Dremur, Willie Green and many other dope NYC underground staples for the first time in person after posting much of their stuff on the site. BHF is where we met Jessica Estevez of iheartdilla.com for the first time after connecting online.
Eternia @ PAID DUES FESTIVAL by Ty Watkins

We're already looking forward to this year's event with its' headliner Q-Tip. But I'm also excited to check out Shad and Eternia, two Canadian artists who have been among my top 10 favorite music folks for over two years. I'm also excited about performances from NYC underground legend Homeboy Sandman and newcomer female emcee Nitty Scott. And they aren't even done announcing the line up, not to mention who Q-Tip may be bringing. I've already taken the time off from work. And word is a few other good people will be in town, including my boss over at skyyhookradio.com. I'm looking forward to building, networking and connecting with some good people again this year in Brooklyn. Are you down?

The week-long Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival kicks off July 11 and culminates with the Family Day and Main Stage Performances on July 16. Throughout the week they'll be a salute to the DJs, the Brooklyn Bodega will have a recognition awards night, in addition to their education initiative and other events. I usually kick it for the tail end of the week. If you're in the city, you should make time. I mean, let's get together for drinks, they're on you. Ha!

In the meantime, look out for more updates as we approach the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival this year. Also, get out and support Show & Prove tonight, with some live performances from folks vying for their chance to perform in July on the main stage.

Stay tuned.

What I'm Watching: Adebisi "Rhythmatic"

Just when you think he's done, he delivers more. Adebisi returns with another video from his TMB presented Blaxploitation Mixtape. According to Adebisi he has a few more videos lined up before he's ready to "retire" the project and drop Part II of Blaxploitation. So, in the meantime enjoy the Damon S. Joy directed video. Shouts to Signif with the cameo too. I see you. Chea!

e.d.g.e. x Steel "24"

I hadn't heard much from e.d.g.e. in recent weeks. This was a guy putting out three or more tracks per week for a while. So, I shot him an email the day before yesterday (I could have just said Tuesday) to check in. Then this morning he hit me (and the rest of the internets) with some new music from him and Steel presented by notorietybeinganobody.com. The two offer up a freeverse over Raekwon's Verbal Intercourse. It's fresh. According to e.d.g.e., we should be looking out for more work from the two in the near future. In the meantime, enjoy this cut. Chea!

KHB "Ma'waukee"

One of my favorite KingHellBastard tracks, with Stan P shooting footage of KHB opening for W-Tang in Milwaukee back in October. The track produced by Dima TheWhiteRussian with co-production credit going to Reason of 4AR. Enjoy.

Backpack Jax "Remember the Future"

Call me forgetful. That's fine. I've had this Backpack Jax track in the inbox for a minute. First, I forgot to give it a listen. Then after I listened, I forgot to write myself a note to post it. Yes, I write myself notes of things to post. Yes, I write those notes on a piece of paper. Ha!

Anyway, I really dig the sort of throwback sound of Backpack Jax (Mauikai and Boogie Monsta). The duo are currently working on their EP and this is their title track, "Remember The Future". A unique, chill and laid back sound. Hit play and enjoy. Chea!

What EMS Is Watching ... @ULuvTashaRamos - "Dysfunctional"

Now raise your hand if you know how much I ADORE this artist! Ha! Duh right? Anyway, my home girl Tasha hit me up on Twitter to share her new video "Dysfunctional" with me. I love it. Tasha is a ball of fire and feisty. I love the simplicity of it all and the professionalism. So many things come across our desks that aren't and believe me when I say we are more than ecstatic when we have artists that really put the time and effort into their craft. I commend her and her team.

But back to the song! Y'all know how I'm a lyric person and if you're listening, we've all had a bit of dysfunction to deal with. Who hasn't? I think "Dysfunctional" really speaks to a lot of relationships people have we each other and the video gives us a look into that emotion we experience when in said "shit"uation. Her vocals, as always, are on point. And again, I look forward to her next video. If I had to put my bid in, I'd love to see some visuals to "Deeper" and "Pack Up," two of my particular favorites.

Now seriously, like I told you folks last time, if you're not familiar with Natasha Ramos, I'm giving you guys ample opportunity to GET familiar. She's got a great hustle and if she keeps going the route she's going, she's has the talent and ability to be an incredible star. '

You can still download her full mix tape here and if you want to get a peeksy into the songs, you can check out my Favorite Five below. Enjoy!

Brown Bag AllStars "The Agenda (Marco Polo Remix)"

Not a fan of The Brown Bag AllStars? That's a shame. Well, no time like the present to become a fan of the NYC crew. They just dropped Brown Bag Season, Vol. 1, which you can get in a digital form on iTunes  and physical form on Fatbeats.com. They're celebrating the release of the project with, as J57 put it "good friend Marco Polo" with the Brown Bag AllStars "The Agenda (Marco Polo Remix)." Enjoy.
